China runs the world's second most active space program, and it is really several programs wearing one flag: a civil agency, a separate human spaceflight office, a state manufacturing giant, and now venture-funded startups landing their own rockets. This guide orders the wiki's China articles into one reading path, from who runs what to the station, the lunar plans, and the commercial sector that recovered its first booster in August 2026.
Who actually runs it
The name Westerners see most, CNSA, is only one piece. The China National Space Administration, established in 1993, sets civil space policy, runs robotic exploration like the Chang'e and Tianwen missions, and represents China internationally. Human spaceflight belongs to a separate body, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), which operates the Tiangong station and the Shenzhou crew flights. And most of what either one flies is built by CASC, the state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, which manufactures the Long March rockets and the majority of Chinese spacecraft. Together they made China the second most active spacefaring nation: its 92 orbital launches in 2025 were a national record and trailed only the United States.
The rockets and where they fly
Long March rockets carry almost everything China's government launches: 664 flights since April 24, 1970, when a Long March 1 orbited the country's first satellite, and more than 86 percent of all Chinese launches. Two generations fly side by side, hypergolic designs descended from the 1970s, including the Long March 2F that has launched every Shenzhou crew, and kerosene- and hydrogen-fueled models introduced since 2015 that carry the heaviest payloads. Geography splits the work between two main sites. Jiuquan, a military-run complex in the Gobi Desert founded in 1958, launched that first satellite and every Chinese astronaut, and its 33 orbital launches in 2025 made it the country's busiest spaceport. Wenchang, on the coast of Hainan island, exists because the 5-meter Long March 5 is too wide for China's railways and arrives by ship; it handles station modules, lunar and Mars missions, and, since November 2024, shares its coastline with China's first commercial spaceport.
Tiangong, the station China built alone
Tiangong exists because of exclusion: US law has barred NASA from bilateral cooperation with China since 2011, and China was kept out of the International Space Station partnership. Three Long March 5B launches delivered the Tianhe, Wentian, and Mengtian modules between April 2021 and October 2022, and rotating three-person crews have staffed the complex without interruption since June 5, 2022. At about 90 tonnes with spacecraft attached, it is roughly a fifth the mass of the ISS, but it is set to grow: officials announced a 20-tonne expansion module in June 2026, the first step toward a planned six-module configuration of about 180 tonnes, and counted 267 science projects running aboard by mid-2026. The station's first foreign visitor, a Pakistani payload specialist, is expected around late 2026.
The Moon: robots first, astronauts before 2030
The Chang'e robotic program has moved in deliberate steps. Chang'e 4 made the first landing on the lunar far side in 2019, Chang'e 5 returned 1,731 grams of samples in 2020, and Chang'e 6 brought back 1,935.3 grams from the far side in June 2024, material no mission had ever collected. Chang'e 7 is next, with a launch window opening August 24, 2026: an orbiter, lander, rover, and a hopping probe designed to fly into permanently shadowed craters near Shackleton crater in search of water ice. The crewed program runs in parallel toward a landing before 2030, using two launches of the new Long March 10; the Mengzhou crew spacecraft and the Lanyue lander dock in lunar orbit. A test article flew a low-altitude profile with China's first maximum dynamic pressure abort test in February 2026, the Long March 10B variant reached orbit that July, and the crew-rated Long March 10A's first orbital flight is targeted for late 2026. Chang'e 7 and Chang'e 8 are precursors to the International Lunar Research Station, a south pole base China plans with Roscosmos and other partners for the 2030s.
The commercial sector lands a rocket
LandSpace, founded in Beijing in 2015, was the first private Chinese company to attempt an orbital launch, and its Zhuque-2 was the first methane-fueled rocket anywhere to reach orbit, in July 2023. Its Zhuque-3 is the country's answer to the Falcon 9: a stainless steel methalox rocket whose first stage lands on legs and is designed for up to 20 flights. On August 19, 2026, the second Zhuque-3 placed a satellite in orbit and set its booster down about 390 kilometers downrange, the first orbital-class booster recovery by a Chinese commercial company; LandSpace aims to refly the stage within six months and is seeking 7.5 billion yuan, about 1 billion dollars, in a Shanghai listing to fund production of up to 20 rockets a year. The state is chasing reusable rockets too: five weeks before the Zhuque-3 landing, the Long March 10B caught its first stage in a shipboard net, China's first recovery of an orbital-class booster. Behind both tracks is constellation math. Officials frame recoverable boosters as a requirement for launching the Guowang and Qianfan broadband megaconstellations, which had 168 and 126 operational satellites respectively by April 2026.
How it compares with the American program
The reuse gap is now measured in years rather than decades. SpaceX landed the first orbital-class booster in December 2015 and its fleet leader has flown 36 missions; China made its first two recoveries in the summer of 2026 and has yet to refly either stage. On the Moon the timelines nearly touch: NASA's Artemis program plans its first crewed landing for 2028, and China aims to land astronauts before 2030. Launch volume still favors the United States, though the lead rests heavily on one company: China's record 92 launches in 2025 came second to an American total that included 165 Falcon 9 flights by SpaceX alone. Where China is not behind is presence. Tiangong is one of only two crewed stations in orbit, its planned expansion runs on as the ISS approaches the end of its planned operating life around 2030, and reports in early 2026 pointed to a Chinese target of as many as 140 launches for the year.

Yes, twice, by two different routes. On July 10, 2026, the state-built Long March 10B caught its first stage in a net strung across a recovery ship, making China the second country to recover an orbital-class booster. On August 19, 2026, LandSpace's Zhuque-3 landed its stage on legs at a desert pad about 390 kilometers downrange, the first recovery by a Chinese commercial company and the country's first on land. Neither stage has flown again yet: CASC plans to refly its booster before the end of 2026, and LandSpace is targeting a reflight within six months.
When will China land astronauts on the Moon?
Before 2030 is the stated goal. The architecture uses two launches of the Long March 10 rocket, one carrying the Mengzhou crew spacecraft and one the Lanyue lander, which dock in lunar orbit. A test article flew a low-altitude profile with an abort test in February 2026, and the crew-rated Long March 10A is targeted to make its first orbital flight, carrying an uncrewed Mengzhou, in late 2026, with uncrewed lunar rehearsals to follow before a landing attempt.
What is the difference between CNSA and CASC?
CNSA is a government agency: it sets civil space policy, runs robotic exploration, and represents China in international cooperation. CASC, the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, is the state-owned contractor that builds the hardware, including the Long March rockets and most Chinese spacecraft. A third body, the China Manned Space Agency, operates the Tiangong station and the Shenzhou crew flights.
Can Chinese rockets compete with SpaceX?
Not yet on volume or reuse. SpaceX flew 165 Falcon 9 missions in 2025 against 92 launches for all of China, and Falcon 9 boosters routinely fly dozens of times each while China's first two recovered stages have yet to refly. The current Zhuque-3 also lifts less: 14,200 kilograms to low Earth orbit expended against Falcon 9's published 22,000 to 22,800. What changed in 2026 is that the question moved from whether to when: two Chinese boosters came back intact within six weeks of each other, and both organizations plan reflights within months.
